I’ve one sitting in my freezer that I shot with my .22 Benjamin Marauder air rifle last year. Been thinking of using Clarissa Dickson Wright’s hare stifado recipe, but looking forward to seeing what you do with yours, Hank!

This was such a beautifully written post, Hank. I might be biased, because it reads like a love letter to the Sonoran desert and I’m quite partial to it too, but still, really really lovely.

De acuerdo Hank, I love the Sonoran Desert. I’ve visited 28 countries and 44 states, and the Sonoran Desert is the most unique place I have ever been in my life.

    Great Post…

Long way from the Sonoran Desert here but I have snowshoe hares in the freezer. I hope you post what you are going to do with these hares

A really great post – i hope to hunt some hares here myself in the next few months, I doubt we’ll see any that big though!

    Keep well

    Great post, Hank.

When you do your follow-up on how to turn one into dinner, I humbly request a rundown on how to properly field dress and transport, particularly in the heat. I’d like to get into rabbit/hare hunting, but I’ve balked because I’ve never broke one down before. I’m also a tad freaked out by disease-carrying fleas. If you’re out on a long high-desert stroll, should you dress them right away?

    Thanks!

    Excellent post!

I’ve never eaten the Opuntia cladodes (pads) except out of a jar (…meh). I have eaten the fruit a time or two though it needs a heavy dose of sugar. Some eastern species have tuberous roots but I’m not sure if they are edible. I would think that they would be quite woody, but who knows. Theres’s one southeastern species that forms a small ‘tree’ (Opuntia ammophila).

    Hank,

I really enjoyed this story. John was telling me about the hunt and it sounded like a blast. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to following your writing here in the future.
