Just got some great news about “Hunt, Gather, Cook” at the same time I got a note from a reader who said: “Wow, your book is not just a retread of your blog.” Well, no. No it isn’t.
Bracken fern lives all over the world. And most every place it lives, people eat it. Yet it’s recently been branded as a carcinogen. That seems to be true, but like all things, the poison’s in the dose.
There is a reason the Danish restaurant NOMA is considered the best in the world. This adaptation of Chef Rene Redzepi’s braised lamb shanks with golden beets and elderflowers is every bit as wonderful to eat as it is to look at.

Homecoming. More than 100 people came out to Grange in Sacramento last night for a special “Hunt, Gather, Cook” dinner. No pressure, right? Actually, no. Great food, great company. A great night.
No matter where I went, from here in Sacramento all the way to South Florida, yucca plants are in bloom. There are lots of different species, but the flowers are all edible – they taste like a cross between a green bean and an artichoke leaf.
The core of each stop on my book tour is a special dinner that highlights the wild foods of that region in that season. If the first dinner in Austin is an indicator, this will be a moveable feast of epic proportions.
As the first leg of this endless book tour of mine winds down, I am struck by the generosity of my friends. Without them, this tour simply could not be done.
