Well this is pretty cool. It seems the folks at the James Beard Foundation like Hunter Angler Gardener Cook enough to nominate me for an award for Best Food Blog. I am a finalist in the category, along with Andrew Knowlton’s blog over at Bon Appetit magazine and a crew of writers over at Sunset magazine.
James Beard is one of those giants of the food world who was, by all accounts, one helluva dinner guest. Beard also was a lover of American food and American ingredients, and as such as became one of my early influences. I have a tattered copy of his Fish Cookery in my collection, and his Fowl And Game Bird Cookery
is among my favorites for game birds. A shame I missed him.
I am happy to be in such fine company as Bon Appetit and Sunset, and am flattered — shocked, really — to be the lone non-commercial blog in the mix. There are so many other great blogs out there: Orangette, Michael Ruhlman, anything Carol Blymire does, Elise’s blog over at Simply Recipes – I could go on and on…
At any rate, I learn whether I am the winner in May at a ceremony in New York City. Manhattan in May is wonderful; I grew up across the river in New Jersey and spent much of my youth there. It’ll be good to get back. Regardless of what happens, it is quite a thing to be so recognized.
And to all of you who are arriving here for the first time because of this nomination, welcome! I hope you like what you find.

Congratulations and well done! What a nice honor for you personally, and a great spotlight on the way of life you champion.
Hank,
Good on ya, partner! Congratulations and well done! We are all pulling for you to be Numero Uno.
Uhhh… You need me to call some of the boys from Hoboken? I could you know. If it’ll help. Just saying.
While you are there, see about stopping at Fiore’s Deli, I use to go there to get mozzarella and prosciutto sandwiches.
So what part of Jersey you from?
Albert
Congratulations Hank and enjoy every second in New York. I think your blog truly represents some groundbreaking journalism, and it’s wonderful to see it getting this much-deserved national attention.
Great work! I’m rooting for the non-commercial blog.
Congratulations! I just discovered your blog from some of your fellow foodbloggers and really enjoy it!
It aint braggin’ if you really done it!
Well played hank, and richly deserved fella
SBW
Mubarak! You are a hunting, angling, gardening and cooking guru. Glad to see others formally recognizing that fact.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed for May!
Ahh! I knew it from the first moment I took my first bite from that exquisite dove which you cooked up at our annual hunt out at N.H.E. Inc.
I just hope that we can persuade you to come out this year as well (if you are not too busy with your own T.V, show.)
Great job Hank!
Hank, this is terrific news! I’m delighted for you, your writing deserves such notice and regardless of the outcome, be content that your passion has been recognized.
Congratulations Hank. This is a great thing and I’m glad other people are recognizing your terrific blog. I’ll be sending good vibes your way the day they announce the winner.
Congratulations Hank! Unfortunately I’ve never been able to actually sample any of your cooking, but I have definitely been inspired by several of your recipes!
good luck!
Jenn
Hank, you’ve got it going! Helped ‘girlfriend’ drop a few, seen the fury in the kitchen, savoured the flavors and enjoyed the wine! My fingers are crossed for May 3rd, you are most deserving.
Tracey
Congrats, Hank!
This is awesome on so many levels, not the least of course, is that I think you truly deserve it. I’m not a huge reader of food blogs, in part because there are so many, and also because so many of them just aren’t accessible to my skills and knowledge level. Yours stands out (and not just because I know ya), and is actually fun to read… although I’d still be intimidated to ever cook for you.
But something equally important is that you’re helping to put wild game eating back into a spotlight… which means putting hunting into a spotlight that I don’t think it’s seen for a long, long time. For that, the hunting and outdoors community owes you our deepest appreciation!
Go shine in May, and don’t be too humble when they call your name. You deserve it!
Congratulations Hank! As one transplanted Jerseyite to another, ya know, I’ve still got connections…a well placed phone call, a gentle suggestion that it might be in someone’s best interest…
Seriously though, this is a well deserved nomination. Your blog is always one of the first things I read every day, and is always informative and extremely well written, not to mention the fact that I usually end up drooling on my keyboard. Best of luck, I’ll keep my fingers crossed!
Keep racking up the accolades, the recognition is much deserved. Congratulations Hank!
Way to go Hank! What a fantastic and well-deserved honor. Enjoy every moment in New York. We’ll all be rooting for you from Sac. Your blog, in my opinion, truly represents some groundbreaking journalism.
Congratulations Hank! I wish you the best of luck.
Congratulations from a former New Jersey-ite! You deserve it.

Congratulations! It’s a real honour and one that is definitely deserved. I am so excited for you. We are all pulling for you to win, so best of luck.
Just read H’s blog about your nomination. Congratulations and enjoy your trip to NY!
Congratulations. You deserve this.
Hey Hank,
Congratulations on the nomination, and best of luck with winning the award. I know it’s about writing, but it’s too bad they can’t taste some of your cooking.
Congratulations! How totally cool. You have such a great way of writing, I’m not surprised. I always bookmark your pheasant recipes since my husband tends to bring many home every year.
Hank! Congratulations!!! That is great news. I was pleased to read it. You deserve the recognition as nobody does what you do, my friend. Way to go! Good luck in May.
Congratulations!
HOOT!!!!
Holy shit mate, this has made my day!!!
Congrats, and so well deserved. Yours is truly one of the best, most unique blogs, written by someone with an incredible talent for both writing and cookery.
Wow – good on ya!
Brilliant. Congratulations!
Hank, I know no site more deserving than yours! Have been giddy with delight since hearing the new.
Hey, thats pretty good going up against the big boys. Congrats, and enjoy the trip!
FAAAAARRRR OUT!
You deserve it because you do this out of love and live the life as a personal commitment – not a job !
Way to go Hank, best of luck to you. We’ll be thinking of you in early May.
Can’t wait to start getting in to your blog…I already found the cardoons and can’t wait to see what you’re doing with say…kholrabi? I am with you on the unusual ingredients journey…and newly inspired, thanks.
Superb, Hank! Glad to see your blog nominated!
You have precious resources you make available here for free…
Hope you will get the Big Prize!!!
Cheers!

me thinks there is no comparison with the others. Commercial blogs are just… commercial. I just don’t feel the same passion coming through (and I really like that you are ad free!)
Can’t resist another opportunity to say I am thrilled to see you get well deserved recognition– AND– I think you have a significant book or two to “cook up” and offer.
Andrea
I’m just so happy to read this, Hank. I’m a great admirer of your dedication and your ability to commmunicate. James Beard’s Delights and Prejudices was one of the first books to inspire my cooking and interest in NW ingredients, so the nomination seems wonderfully apt.
hank, i so hope you win. this is a great blog – the writing and the food. an omnivore that has solved his own dilemma… that was just too good.
Hank, that’s awesome news and well deserved! What a tribute to your work. Good luck too!
I was away and traveling this past week so am just now reading this blog. Your food passion combined with your talented writing skill makes reading your blog my daily treat! It is the first thing I check each morning. See you at the awards! Rooting for you with love and pride!
As you say, Hank, there are lots of good food blogs out there. But yours is GREAT, and you deserve to win this! Best of luck!
Hank:
OMG! Congrats! I have just returned from Carolina, where a bear broke into Mom’s backporch for a birdseed snack…about 10 lbs. of it. I was thinking of you that day. Actually, thinking of borrowing one of your guns. Speaking of large bores, you have come a long way from hunting politicians in the gubmint thickets of Sacramento. Your new gig is much more tasteful, in every sense…Cheers!
