So Much for That…

Jul 1st, 2008 | By Hank | Category: Uncategorized | Comments | 15 Comments |

I guess there are just too many food blog events these days. After a fantastic opener, this edition of my Meat & GreetThings That Used to Fly – came and went with just one entry, Anna from Sydney, Australia. At least it was a good entry.

Anna whipped up a lovely Senegalese chicken-and-vinegar dish called Yassa au Poulet, which I have made myself years ago. I studied Africa in graduate school and once worked as a cook in an Ethiopian restaurant, so I developed quite the range of African dishes in the early 1990s.

I honestly thought I would get more entries for a poultry event than I would for one featuring offal. Go figure. Was it the free book I promised for the offal contest? Or is everyone just too busy getting by in this economy to have time for blog events?

Regardless, I will take the lack of interest in Meat & Greet as a sign and quit while I’m behind. Ah well, at least there is still Paper Chef, which I will announce manana…

  1. I meant to enter, I really did. I even knew what I was going to make – chicken gizzard confit. So sorry I never organizaed myself sufficiently to write it up. :-(

  2. Dear Hunter! I didn’t know you were organizing an event… I always try to participate in all events I can… so sorry to be late :(

Hey if you organize another one, count on me :D !!! I mean to visit you often and have your blog link in mine… I’m just so short of time!

  3. I wouldn’t stop but people are busier in the summer, perhaps do one again in the fall. My wife thought about it but we have gotten caught up in a kitchen do over that has absorbed all of our time.

And as well it has to be something that interests me, the best I could come up with that wasn’t another offal dish was a rather mundane smoked turkey.

  4. I liked the idea of the event – I just am such a basic cook that I figured I wouldn’t have anything to offer all these people that REALLY know how to cook wild game.

  5. Meat and Greet is a great blog event. I hope you’ll continue. Perhaps every quarter.

I loved the offal event and meant to enter this one. I was paralyzed with the idea of coming up with an original (different) recipe for poultry. Finally, I decided on roast pigeon and thought I had lots of time to make it but was unable to meet the deadline because of a family event.

  6. Oh, please don’t stop! I was going to enter (had roast duck with fig and watermelon jam in mind), but my summer job has been eating my life.

  7. such a shame! i (clearly) thought it was a great idea for an event.

there are so many vegetarian events out there, please don’t give up on your carnivorous one :)

  8. I’m another who would’ve entered (for the first time) except that I’m more outside than inside these days (other than that dratted job I go to, of course). It sounds like it’s just summer doldrums and you shouldn’t be discouraged.

  9. OK all, after hearing from you I will try another Meat & Greet. Probably around Labor Day. I will post up here then and let y’all know personally when I do. Deal?

  10. It’s all my fault; I never got around to entering the ostrich thing. Sorry. I did mean to. My life will be a little simpler in September.

  11. I wanted to enter to be honest, but it seemed kind of like doing a chicken dish wasn’t creative enough. After the offal event I figured, I can’t do freaking CHICKEN! The other thing is the timing… with summer starting, for me at least, it’s just been a busy time. With the long 4th weekend, many people took the week off and went on vacation. PLEASE don’t stop meat and greet! it’s a real great event b/c there are strict guidelines and it’s all about MEAT!!!!! please reconsider! Also, maybe you should do a reminder about the event on your sidebar?

  12. I would have been a new participant…even planned a bit about duck or quail…but Life got the best of me! I’m looking forward to the Labor Day event…could you give us a wee hint on your theme??

  13. A wee hint, huh? Sorry, but I actually have several ideas roiling about now, and have yet to decide on one. And I will better promote the next one, too — I like We Are Never Full’s idea of putting something on a sidebar. I will do that.

  14. PLEASE do not give up on Meat and Greet!

I wanted to do a pie of robin breasts that were eating my straberries, but my neighbors turned me in to the SPCA and I bare escaped capture.

Besides, summer is always a bad time to have an event–everyone is always on the way to or back from somewhere else and they miss the deadline. Hunting season is coming up–please reconsider.

  15. And I would have submitted the recipe but my DH would not let me «dry-lab» my entry!
