WBW #42: Salice Salentino

I am really digging the concept of Wine Blogging Wednesday: A group of us get together once a month to review either one type of wine, or one year, or some other theme. This month was a sort of writing test – write a review of an Italian red wine in seven words, sort of a haiku ode to a vino rosso.
I chose one of my go-to wines from Puglia, the Taurino Salice Salentino. I have several
vintages in my little collection, so I grabbed a 2001 Riserva, let it open and walked away for a while. The wine is a combination of Negroamaro and Malvasia Nero (I recently reviewed another Negroamaro I liked very much) and may possibly be the best value in all Italy…the wine can be had for less than $12 in some places. And at 13.5 percent alcohol, it’s an easy drinking wine.
So what’s my review? Here goes:
- A gulpable feast of cherries and leather.
Yep, that’s it. And as a bonus, here’s a bit of haiku doggerel:
Charming courtesan
Stroking my thirsty palate
I am quite refreshed.

UPDATE: So they’ve posted this month’s roundup, and here is another review of a Salice Salentino.

I’m glad to see that you posted early….I wanted to see how someone else went about this! Great review
do not delete it
my funny fish collar joke
I leave yours on mine
I would love a glass of this. It’s from my grandparents birthplace so it has to be good
Bravo on the haiku! And I will of course save both your fish collar joke and a glass of Salice for you…well, I’ll save a bottle in case you ever happen to be in Sacramento, California…
Nice review, BUT… “a”, “of”, “and”? You wasted almost half of your 7-word allotment on words any headline writer would know to leave out. C’mon! There’s room in there for “best value” and “easy” if you’re willing to squeeze.
Anyways, I’ve added the wine, with your review, to Vinismo:

If you have more to fill in, that’d be great.
As a long-time reporter, I can tell you that I will never degenerate into the world of headline writing, Hate it, hate it, hate it. I will stick with proper use of prepositions, thank you.
Hello Hank… it’s possible I judged the Salice Salentino too harshly in my WBW post as it was basically a pop-and-pour situation… on the 2nd day I seemed to enjoy it more…! Eek, next month will take more time in my assessment! Wow, cherries and leather is really spot-on.
I’m a fan of the region, the varietals, and the value that is available from Puglia, and other less-well-known regions of Italy. I’m envious of your vertical collection of this one, as it sounds good.
